It's a great choice if there is little or no surface rust, which means you can skip right to sealing and painting. I won't go into detail here, as to how to do the sandblasting, as it's covered in detail in the small sandblaster section, but that's the route I chose with this piece. The surface you get after sandblasting is slightly porous, from the high pressure sand hitting the metal and depending on your next step, may be all you need to skip to the paint prep stage.
Once I had the surface as close as I could get with my sandblaster, I switched to a small sanding block and grit sandpaper. Here's what the air cleaner restoration looked like after sandblasting and a quick sanding with grit sandpaper.
During a quick test fit, to make sure nothing had been bent or twisted before paint prep, I noticed that there were a few small dents in the air cleaner body. So before I jump to paint, I need to fix that little issue and then the piece can be primed for paint.
Just like we did for the bigger body panels, in the Mustang Restoration section on body finishing, a small amount of light weight auto body filler is all that's necessary to fill this minor imperfection and achieve a great looking result for the air cleaner restoration.
I'll sand it to the basic contours with an 80 grit paper on my sanding block and then cut it back again to a finer cut, with a grit paper on the block. This is the time to make sure you found everything before you paint.
Nothing is more frustrating, than thinking that you have all the little issues repaired and painting your part, and then finding some large scratch, or dent. Once it's looking right, all the pieces of the air cleaner restoration on this Mustang will be treated to a couple of coats of a good primer-surfacer or fill primer, which will cover the small scratches from the fairly coarse sandpaper and then the entire primed assembly will be finish sanded with paper in preparation for paint.
The great thing about doing the air cleaner restoration, is that you don't need any special tools or equipment. Once you're happy with the look of your part in primer, it's time for paint. While we could use a great big compressor and professional spray gun, it really isn't necessary for the average do it your selfer to have, in order to make a nice professional looking result.
